The front-wheel drive hatch is powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine that produces 66kW and 120Nm. The entry-level GL is offered with either a five-speed manual or CVT automatic and the top-spec GLX comes with the CVT auto only.
From the outside the Ignis provides a bold modern-retro design style, with Suzuki turning to its own history for inspiration, with the Japanese-market Cervo coupe of the 1970’s used as the basis for the shape of the glasshouse, louvered C-pillar and framed headlights and grille.
The compact Ignis measures just 3700mm from nose to tail, slotting in between Suzuki’s sub-light Celerio and light Swift hatches in length, but with a lofty 1595mm height and 180mm of ground clearance - more than Mazda CX-3 or Honda HR-V.
Kerb weight is also amongst the lightest in the segment with the Ignis GL manual tipping the scales at just 820kg (865kg for the automatic), giving the Ignis a better power-to-weight ratio than the Swift and leading to fuel consumption as low as 4.7L/100km for the manual and 4.9L/100km for the automatic.
Interestingly the Ignis GL offers seating for five, with a 60:40 split fold rear seat whereas the Ignis GLX drops to a four-seater, but with a 50:50 folding rear seat that can be slid forward to increase boot space.
The Ignis GL offers standard fabric seat trim, cruise control with speed limiter, leather-wrapped steering wheel, halogen headlights and fog lights and 15-inch steel wheels with full wheel covers.
Move up to the Ignis GLX and equipment includes keyless entry and start, electronic climate control, LED headlights, LED running lights, privacy glass, height adjustable driver’s seat and 16-inch alloy wheels.
All Ignis models come standard with an 8.0-inch touchscreen with standard satellite navigation including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, Bluetooth and a four speaker sound sysyem on the GL, which is increased to six speakers for GLX.
Safety equipment includes six airbags, electronic stability and traction control, front seatbelt pretensioners, rear-view camera and breakaway pedals in the event of an accident. Hill hold assist is only offered in the CVT models while autonomous braking is not yet offered either standard or as an option.
While the Ignis’ chunky styling already makes a bold statement Suzuki will also offer a range of funky coloured-contrast exterior accessories (blue, white or orange) to dress up the grille, fog light surrounds, alloy wheels and mirrors (which can also be capped in red or black) with the aim of providing cheap and easy dealer-fitted accessories to customers.
Similarly the inside of the Ignis breaks away from tradition with a bold black and white colour scheme and strong geometric design with high-gloss titanium or orange highlights. There is also the option to add blue or red trims to the door pulls, centre console and air vent surrounds.
The Ignis colour palette extends to Flame Orange, Neon Blue, Fervent Red with black roof, Mineral Grey and Pure White, available with an optional black roof with orange interior highlights for white and orange cars, and titanium in all other colours.
The Ignis is priced right alongside similar light hatches with the Ignis GL manual starting from just $15,990 and adding just $1000 for the automatic. The Ignis GLX starts from an attractive $18,990.
