The current-generation Porsche Panamera is now seven years old, a year past the usual retirement age for a passenger car.

Its replacement is waiting in the wings, however, and overnight Porsche let loose a brief teaser video to whet the appetites of those awaiting the second generation of Porsche’s fast four-door.

The teaser doesn’t give too much away, though its Youtube cover image provides us a straight-on glimpse of the new Panamera’s rump and its slimline, 911-esque tail lamp arrangement.

The shape of its tail lamps - framed by Porsche’s signature bulging rear fenders - also mimics those of the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo concept (above), while its full-width LED bar also recalls the all-electric Mission E concept of 2015 and the present-day Porsche 911.

Compared to the current Panamera, the new car looks like it will sport a daintier, less bulky design with a lot more visual crossover with Porsche’s two-door sports cars like the 911 and Cayman.

One curious feature is what appears to be a longitudinal split in its rear wing. Is Porsche planning to equip the Panamera with a Pagani Huayra style differential downforce system, or is it an evolution of the current Panamera GTS' bifurcated, articulating spoiler? We’ll have to wait until the Paris Motor Show in October to find out.

Prototypes previously sighted orbiting the Nurburgring in Germany confirm that the 2017 Panamera will continue to be offered as a liftback four-door “coupe”, though a wagon bodystyle may be added following the four-door’s debut.

V6 petrol and diesel powerplants plus V8-powered range-toppers will likely continue to be offered, along with a plug-in hybrid model.
