The GT-R NISMO has come in for a cosmetic revamp for the 2017 model year, with internal and external changes similar to those of the “vanilla” Nissan GT-R that was updated earlier in the month.
Like that car, the GT-R NISMO now adopts Nissan’s “V-Motion” grille design along with bigger air inlets, though the NISMO’s version of the bumper features additional venting, unique LED foglamps and a prominent front splitter.
It’s also crafted from hand-laid lightweight carbon fibre, and helps the 2017 GT-R NISMO generate more downforce than any other production Nissan to date.
The bonnet is reinforced to resist deformation at high speed and the wheels are updated to the latest TE37 Ultra Track Edition spec, but the GT-R NISMO’s side skirts and rear bumper carry over unchanged.
The carbon fibre rear wing is mounted lower than the previous model year, but the wing itself appears to be the same.
Performance upgrades are minimal, with the NISMO-tuned 3.8 litre twin-turbo V6 engine continuing unchanged with outputs of 441kW and 652Nm.
However, structural reinforcements and retuned dampers, springrates and stabiliser bars have yielded faster turn-in response and improved slalom times.
It’s incremental - Nissan quotes a 2 percent improvement in slalom performance - but it’s an improvement nevertheless.
Inside there’s the same revamped dashboard and centre console as the regular GT-R, albeit trimmed in dark Alcantara, black leather and red contrast stitching.
The NISMO’s steering wheel is the same design as the MY17 GT-R, but gets grippy Alcantara around its entire circumference - save for a small strip at the 12-oclock position where a band of red leather is stitched in.
A pair of leather/Alcantara carbon fibre bucket seats are supplied by Recaro and are unique to the GT-R NISMO.
The 8-inch touchscreen infotainment is new to the MY17 GT-R range and is controllable either directly via touch or through a rotary dial mounted on the centre console.
As before, a plethora of performance data can be viewed on the screen, informing the driver of everything from front torque bias, peak G numbers and turbocharger boost pressure.
