The 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe has been unveiled at the New York Auto Show, revealing the production bodywork for the fastback prestige medium SUV designed to tackle BMW’s conceptually similar X4.

First hinted at with the 2015 GLC Coupe Concept revealed at the Shanghai Auto Show, the GLC Coupe has made the move to production with minimal changes, apart from the usual concept-to-reality modifications to wheels, bumpers, lights, and door handles.

Described as “the sports car among Mercedes-Benz's mid‑size SUVs,” the GLC Coupe features standard sports suspension, and more direct sports steering.

Powertrains will be drawn from the existing GLC SUV portfolio, with GLC 220d and GLC 250d four-cylinder diesel engines rated at 125kW and 150kW respectively.

A petrol powered GLC 250 with 155kW will also be available, whime a plug-in hybrid GLC 350e offering a combined 235kW output and up to 30km of electric-only range will also be offered.

Those looking for further on-road thrills can opt for the Mercedes-AMG enhanced GLC 43, powered by the same twin-turbo V6 as found in the regular GLC 43 SUV.

All engines except for the GLC 350e are mated to a nine-speed 9G-Tronic automatic (the GLC 350e sticks with the older 7G-Tronic seven-speed auto) delivering drive to the available Mercedes-Benz’ 4Matic all wheel drive system.

"The GLC Coupé reflects our iconic Mercedes-Benz coupe design while symbolising the bipolarity of our brand - it is 'hot and cool'," according to Gorden Wagener, Daimler’s Head of Design.

"With its design idiom of sensual purity, it perfectly embodies our styling philosophy while at the same time representing contemporary luxury."

Thanks to it’s more sharply-angled tailgate, cargo capacity drops to 490 litres behind the rear seats, or 1205 litres with the seats folded, compared to the more generous 580 litres and 1600 litres of the SUV.

Early adopters will also be treated to the option of an Edition 1 model during the first twelve months of production, featuring an AMG-line exterior package, selected Designo paint finishes, 20-inch alloy wheels, and a bi-colour leather interior.
