Mazda released the first official teaser image of its second-generation CX-5, set to undergo an official unveiling at November’s Los Angeles Auto Show.

Though shrouded in darkness in this first image, the 2017 CX-5 appears to flaunt a heavily chrome-lined lower window line, which wraps up to a more compact D-pillar window, giving the CX-5 a more sporting silhouette.

Subtle wheel-arch blisters and a rounded light catcher at the base of the front doors give a hint of how Mazda will evolve its Kodo styling language, with the CX-5 to be the first Kodo vehicle to enter its second generation.

Some cues from the larger CX-9 also appear to have made it across to Mazda’s medium SUV, though they’re more difficult to see through the darkness, including the chrome-edged lower intakes and upright shovel-nose grille.

Mazda is also tipped to introduce its ‘SkyActiv 2’ driveline technology to the new CX-5 though no official confirmation has been received. Expect improved consumption and emissions, with small power gains for both the naturally aspirated petrol and turbo diesel engines.

Locally Mazda Australia has expressed a desire to include the turbocharged 2.5 litre petrol engine from the CX-9 to give top-end versions of the smaller CX-5 some added punch, though a lack of global demand for such a configuration could mean Australia may have to go without.

Mazda’s G-Vectoring Control handling technology, and an improved safety suite will also for part of the CX-5’s standard features list, though the full extent of those changes is yet to be revealed.

More information about the new CX-5 will be revealed at the LA Auto Show on November 16, be sure to check back with TMR for all the details
