Though hardly a large segment in Australia, Kia has decided to soldier on with the Rondo small people mover, providing a smaller option for families for whom the larger Carnival might be too large or expensive.
In an attempt to broaden the Rondo’s appeal, a new five-seat version will be introduced, lining up alongside the previous seven-seat model to offer a low-price mainstream competitor to high-roofed hatchbacks like the Citroen C4 Picasso and Mercedes-Benz B-Class.
The range has also been adjusted, with the top-spec Platinum model cut from the line-up, leaving a two-model range including the new the five-seat Rondo S and continuing seven-seat Rondo Si.
The range-changes come in addition to those made for the 2016 model year which saw the mid-grade SLi variant, and optional diesel engine discontinued in Australia.
Both Rondo variants are powered by the same 122kW/213Nm 2.0 litre four-cylinder petrol engine, paired with a six-speed automatic and front-wheel-drive.
Standard features include 16-inch wheels (steel on S, alloy in Si), rear park sensors, rear view camera, cloth seat trim, six airbags, cruise control with speed limiter, and satellite navigation on Rondo Si.
The Seven-seat Si provides 492 litres of luggage space with the seats up, and 1650 with all seats folded while the five-seat S brings a more roomy 536 litres with seats up and 1694 litres with seats folded.
Pricing for the Rondo Si remains unchanged, with the Rondo S arriving some $4500 cheaper.
Kia Rondo S $26,990
Kia Rondo Si $31,490
Pricing excludes on-road costs.
