Kia has released its new 2017 Picanto light car in Australia - less than 13 months after the previous generation went on sale in Australia.

The reason for the quick change is the previous Picanto’s age overseas, and Kia Australia’s desire to establish the Picanto name locally. In its place, the new model features a sharper design, more technology, and for the first time an available manual transmission.

As before, Kia will import just one trim level, powered by a 1.25-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine producing 62kW of power and 122Nm of torque - down 1kW but up 2Nm over the previous version.

For the first time buyers will be able to choose between a five-speed manual transmission from $14,190 plus on-road costs, or a four-speed automatic priced at $15,690 driveaway. The new pricing straddles the previous Picanto’s $14,990 driveaway pricing.

To help justify the price rise the new picanto features a resigned and more premium interior, with a 7.0-inch touchscreen taking pride of place high in the dash, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities.

Also included in the new Picanto are standard cruise control, multi-function trip computer, front and rear power windows, four-speaker audio, cloth seat trim, and manual air conditioning.

Standard safety features include ABS brakes, electronic stability control, reverse park sensors, rear view camera, six airbags, and rear ISOFIX child seat mounts.

Exterior touches include 14-inch steel wheels with full wheel covers, heated power-folding rearview mirrors, and full body-coloured mirrors, door handles, and bumpers for an integrated appearance.

Compared to the outgoing model boot space grows by 55 litres to 255 in total with the seats up, or an even larger 1010 litres with the seats folded. External dimensions stay the same, at 3595mm long, 1595mm wide, but the wheelbase grows by 15mm to 2400mm to the benefit of interior space.

As with the rest of Kia’s range in Australia the Picanto comes backed by Kia’s seven-year warranty, seven years roadside assist, and seven years capped price servicing.

Picanto manual $14,190 (plus on road costs)
Picanto automatic $15,690 (driveaway)
