While the initial release concentrates of the five-door hatch, Hyundai promises that the 130 will grow to a family of vehicles, the flagship of which will be the i30 N hot hatch currently in development.
The new i30 also showcases the next step in Hyundai’s design direction, with more organic forms, and fronted by an upright ‘cascading grille’ inspired by the flow of molten metal. Both front and rear lighting elements offer simple forms, with sophisticated LED illumination.
Inside the i30 moves to a horizontally oriented interior design, with a focus on making the i30 feel more premium through the use of richer materials, and chrome highlights.
An optional 8.0-inch ‘floating’ touchscreen places high on the dash takes care of navigation functions as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity. Wireless phone charging also joins the list of available features.
Safety credentials have also been upgraded with available safety equipment including autonomous emergency braking, Adaptive cruise control, driver fatigue monitoring, lane keeping assist, and blind spot detection.
Under the bonnet Hyundai will introduce a range of three turbocharged petrol engines for Europe, including a new 1.4 litre variant producing 103kW of power. While construction makes use of 53% percent high strength steel, allowing a more rigid chassis while keeping weight down.
Australian buyers will be introduced to the new i30 range in the first half of 2017, with local models expected to vary slightly in their final specification compared to Europe. TMR will bring you more details about the new i30 range as it becomes available.
