An interview with Fiat executive Harald Wester in late December drove the final nail into the coffin of Alfa Romeo’s Mazda-based roadster.

But, as that report revealed, the project is not dead… merely transformed. Wester confirmed that Fiat is still under contract to develop a model based on Mazda’s new MX-5.

That model, Wester said, is now likely to “find a new home with Fiat-Abarth”, suggesting we could see a reborn Fiat 124 Sport Spider debut in the coming years.

A rendering produced for German paper AutoBild offered a convincing preview of how such a model might look, but, this week, independent artist Theophilus Chin has taken a different view of what we could soon see.

Chin’s roadster is more plainly based on the all-new 2015 MX-5, boasting largely identical bodywork and a lightly reworked look to the headlights.

A more distinctly Fiat garnish bridges the gap between the headlights, while a small bonnet scoop hints at a top-mounted intercooler for a small turbocharged engine.
