Ahead of its public debut next week, the hatch version of the next-generation Chevrolet Cruze has been unveiled as part of Chevy’s Detroit Auto Show entourage. Joining the sedan shown last year, the new five-door will be offered for sale for the first time in the United States.
While the current Cruze is sold in Australia wearing Holden badges, there has been no official announcement confirming this new model for the Australian market (although a slip to journalists including TMR from a Holden insider has indicated it will continue, selling alongside the new Opel Astra which is confirmed for sale here).
The Cruze, we think, will likely be a sedan-only proposition. Holden has previously offered a two-tier small car strategy, selling earlier versions of the Astra as the more up-market alternative to the entry-level Viva, the predecessor to the Cruze.
For the North American market the new Cruze hatch will only be offered in high-end trims, LT and Premier (there’s another blast from Holden’s past) while the sedan will also offer two lower-spec variants as well.
With sleeker lines (compared to the current Cruze hatch), the new liftback wears the same front as the sedan, with a tapered roofline and slimmer rear window aperture. Wider tail-lights that extend into the tailgate complete the picture.
The vehicle depicted in the first series of images also wears the optional RS styling package that brings sportier bumpers front and rear, side-sill extensions, and 18-inch alloy wheels for a more sporting look.
The Cruze hatch will offer just one engine, a turbocharged 1.4 litre four-cylinder producing 114kw and 240Nm, bridging the gap between the current Cruze’s atmo 1.8 and turbocharged 1.6 litre engine options.
“As Cruze continues to set the tone for Chevrolet globally, it articulates the brand promise of offering cars with the latest technologies, more features and greater efficiency, performance and safety with fresh, distinctive styling.” Said Alan Batey, president of GM North America and Global Chevrolet.
Among those latest technologies, the Cruze will offer MyLink infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities, as well as offering 4G LTE WiFi connectivity. Rear cross traffic alert, blind zone alert, and lane-keep assist will also be available.
Like the Astra, the Cruze is built on General Motors’ D2XX platform, and, thanks to the increased use of high-strength steel, the new generation sheds 91kg compared to the outgoing model.
The current Cruze is Chevrolet’s best selling car globally, having sold 3.5 million units since arriving in 2008. The new Cruze hatch will go on sale overseas in the third quarter of 2016.
