BMW tuning ace, Alpina, has continued its foray into the Australia market with the arrival of the BMW Alpina B7 Bi-Turbo.
As the name suggests, the B7 is based on the regular BMW 7 Series but the tuner has added a bagful of performance, comfort and tech items.
Alpina has taken the 7 Series’ 4.4 litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine and boosted performance to 447kW of power and 800Nm of torque.
Compared with the range-topping BMW 750Li, the B7 boasts an additional 117kW and 150Nm, while also trimming the 0-100km/h time from 4.7 to 4.2 seconds.
Top speed is 330km/h, and drive is sent to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.
For drivers keen on testing the B7’s limits, a Drexler Motorsport limited-slip differential is optional. Aplina says around 20 percent of its customers in Europe opt for the Drexler diff, and the company expects the figure to be even higher in Australia.
BMW’s Integral Active Steering with rear-wheel steering combines with a selectable driving-mode system - which includes Sport+ and the option to lower the ride-height by 20mm - to further enhance the driving experience.
Despite weighing more than two tonnes, the B7 manages an official fuel figure of 9.6 l/100km, although this is 1.1 l/100km thirstier than the 750Li.
Outside, there’s 21-inch, 20-spoke alloy wheels wearing Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres and hiding four-piston fixed 395mm brake callipers up front with 370mm floating callipers at the rear, along with laser headlamps, a panoramic glass roof, quad tail pipes and a choice of two unique metallic paint finishes: Alpina Blue or Alpina Green.
Inside, buyers are treated to massaging seats (including the rear seat), Nappa leather, Piano lacquer or Myrtle luxury wood finishes, a rear-seat entertainment system with a pair of 10-inch screens, a Blu-Ray player, a sports steering wheel and much more.
The price-hike over the BMW 750Li perhaps isn’t what you’d expect, with prices for the 2017 BMW Alpina B7 Bi-Turbo starting at $369,720 compared with $314,500 for the 750Li.
