Initial details of the 5 Series Touring include a four engine range, and a strong focus on technology, following the example set by the sedan.
BMW will offer a pair of diesel engines a 140kW/400Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel in the entry-level 520d and a 195W/620Nm 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo diesel engine in the 530d.
Petrol power is provided by either a 185kW/350Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder in the 530i and a 250kW/450Nm turbocharged inline six-cylinder unit for the 540i. Overseas the entire range can be paired with either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic.
BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system is standard on the 540i and optional on the 530d with all other variants featuring standard rear wheel drive, upholding BMW’s traditional rear-drive layout.
Compared to the sedan the 5-Series Touring has been extended by 36mm in length, 8mm in width and 10mm in height, while the wheelbase has grown by 7mm all of which should translate to a roomier interior.
Folding rear seats allow for a total boot capacity of 1700 litres or 570 litres with the seat up.
BMW has really upped the safety suite in the new 5-Series with a range of in-car safety tech offered including forward collision and pedestrian warning with autonomous braking, cross traffic alert, lane keep assist and automated parking.
A massive 10.25-inch touchscreen dominates the interior, with functions able to be controlled by voice commands and gestures. The touchscreen is also compatible with Apple CarPlay.
A large head-up display, now 70 percent larger than before, displays a range of information and it uses GPS location and road-sign software to determine whether or not to activate the engine's stop-start function to save fuel.
The new BMW 5-Series Touring goes on sale in Europe this June, with the Australian launch expected later in the year.
