Ferrari has graced the top step of the podium at the Australian F1 Grand Prix for the first time since 2007, with lead driver Sebastian Vettel claiming victory at the 2017 season-opener.
Under sunny Melbourne skies, the Ferrari driver showed a clean pair of heels against main rival, Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton, who struggled with tyres during the race.
The Briton made an early stop to change from the ultra-soft tyre to the soft tyre, saying that the ultra-soft rubber was overheating.
But the timing was poor for Hamilton, who re-joined the track stuck behind Red Bull driver Max Verstappen. With Vettel’s later stop, the German also switched to the soft tyre from the ultra-softs and retained the lead after a few tense cornering moments while he brought his tyres up to temperature.
