Launched in 2007, Audi’s current-generation A5 Coupe is the oldest model in the German marque’s product portfolio. Salvation is at hand, however: Audi has revealed its all-new second generation A5 Coupe at a gala event in Germany overnight, with the new car sporting the latest version of Audi’s corporate design language.
It’s also built on a new architecture, with an evolved version of the VW Group MLB platform sitting underneath. The biggest benefit of the new underpinnings is a reduction in weight - compared to a similarly-specced outgoing model, the new A5 is some 60 kilos lighter.
Visually, it’s crisp, bold and very business-like. A sharply-defined shoulder line runs from headlamps to tail lamps, with bulging wheelarches to emphasise the A5’s width.
Length grows by 5cm to 4.67m and height remains the same at 1.37m, however Audi is keeping more detailed dimensional data under wraps for now..
The bonnet pressing gains additional creases, the headlamps are bigger and Audi’s signature hexagonal grille is flatter, wider and more prominent than before.
An integrated bootlid spoiler continues to be an A5 hallmark, and the 2017 A5’s glasshouse follows the same pattern as the current model. Wing mirrors become pedestal mounted to improve aerodynamics and reduce wind noise.
The new A5 will be sold in Germany with five engines - two turbo petrol and three turbo diesel. Full details have yet to be revealed, but the engine range will start with a 140kW entry-level four-cylinder and top out with a 210kW twin-turbo 3.0 litre diesel V6.
Performance is said to be increased by as much as 17 percent, while fuel consumption falls by up to 22 percent.
In the middle will be a 160kW low-output 3.0 turbo diesel. All engines bar the top-spec diesel will make use of either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch auto, while the 210kW diesel V6 receives an eight-speed automatic as standard.
As with the current A5, the next-gen model will continue to be available either with a FWD driveline in lower-spec models or quattro AWD in high-grade variants.
Suspension is double-wishbone at front and multi-link at the rear, with some models receiving electronically-adjustable dampers for a sportier ride. Electromechanical steering will be standard across the range
Inside, the new A5’s interior borrows heavily from the A4 sedan. Much of the dashboard and centre console is identical, offering a significant update on the current A5’s antiquated interior furniture.
Like the A4, the new A5 will be available with Audi’s 12.3-inch “Virtual Cockpit” instrument panel, while an 8.3-inch retractable infotainment display sits high in the centre of the dash
Audi claims the new A5’s interior “benefits from the increased dimensions and longer wheelbase” with more generous space for drivers and passengers, however the company doesn’t detail precisely how much more room has been liberated.
However, Audi does make mention of the 2017 A5’s bigger boot, which now measures 10 litres bigger than before at 465L. The rear seat also boasts a 40:20:40 split to help carry longer items.
The 2017 Audi A5 is set to go on sale in Europe by the end of this year. Local release timing is set for the first half of 2017. The convertible A5 Cabrio and five-door A5 Sportback variants will likely follow.
