Alfa Romeo’s highly-anticipated Giulia medium sedan range will go on sale in Australia with a sub-$60,000 starting price, ready to go head-to-head with fellow Europeans including the BMW 3-Series.

The range starts with the simply-named Giulia, powered a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine producing 147kW/330Nm, and priced from $59,895 (plus on-road costs) when it goes on sale later this month.

The competitive price sees the Giulia undercut the similarly-powered BMW 320i sedan which like the Giulia features rear-wheel drive, although the 3-Series range starts with a less-powerful and cheaper 318i variant for a few thousand dollars less.

Standard equipment in the Alfa includes powered front seats, leather trim, keyless ignition, an 8.8-inch infotainment display with satellite navigation, bi-xenon headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels and dual-zone climate control.

With an eight-speed automatic transmission it accelerates to 100km/h in a claimed 6.6 seconds while returning a combined fuel consumption figure of 6.0 L/100km.

The Giulia range then moves up to the Giulia Super, priced from $64,195 with an identical mechanical package but additional standard equipment including upgraded leather for the seats, extending to the dashboard and door trims with wood grain for the centre console. It also has eight-way seat adjustment, active cruise control and blind-spot monitoring.

For an extra $1700 the Giulia Super is also available with a 2.2-litre diesel engine rated at 132kW/450Nm, capable of sprinting from 0-100 km.h in 7.1 seconds with official fuel consumption of 4.2 L/100km.

The $71,895 Giulia Veloce model adds extra sporting appeal thanks to an upgraded version of the 2.0-litre turbo engine producing 206kW/400Nm while trimming the 0-100km/h time to 5.7 seconds.

The Veloce also features active suspension, a limited slip differential and 19-inch alloys with bigger tyres.

It also looks more sporty, thanks to a deeper front spoiler and mesh grille, side skirts, rear diffuser panel and even red-painted brake calipers. Inside it has sports seats and steering wheel, and a more powerful sound system.

At the head of the Giulia range, the previously announced Quadrifoglio Verde (QV) starts from $143,900, bringing with it a hefty performance boost that puts the flagship model in the same territory as the BMW M3 or Mercedes-AMG C 63 S.

With 375kW from its 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 the QV will hit 100km/h in a claimed 3.9 seconds on its way to a 307km/h top speed.

There's also plenty of carbon fibre, including the adjustable front air dam, bonnet and roof panels, lots of Ferrari inspired hardware such as the engine's torque delivery and adjustable stability control parameters, plus big Brembo brakes with carbon-ceramic discs an option.
