A report in the German press suggests Volkswagen will unveil an all-new Tiguan at September's Frankfurt Motor Show, finally giving the German auto giant a fresh replacement for its ageing small SUV.

The Tiguan notches up its eighth birthday this year, making it the oldest car in its segment by a number of years. A replacement, then, is well overdue.

Details are scant at this stage, but expect the new Tiguan to be based on the Golf 7's MQB modular architecture and be powered by a similar range of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines.

Styling is still a mystery too, but graphic artist Remco Meulendijk has had a stab at rendering what the new Tiguan could look like.

Three bodystyles are rumoured to be in the works: a standard five-door wagon, a long-wheelbase version of the wagon - potentially bringing a 5+2 seating option - and a low-roofed five-door based on 2013's Crossblue Coupe Concept.

We'll hear more about the new Tiguan at Frankfurt - if the rumours are true, of course.
