Volkswagen Australia will debut the scorching-hot Golf R Wagon as a $58,990 special edition, with the order book now open and deliveries set to commence in September.
Dubbed the Golf R Wagon Wolfsburg Edition (named in honour of Volkswagen's home city), it will be accompanied by the $56,990 Golf R Wolfsburg Edition hatch - which costs a $1750 premium over the regular Golf R hatch.
The Wolfsburg Edition package adds a smattering of cosmetic and equipment upgrades, with black 19-inch Pretoria alloy wheels, black mirror casings, "Carbon Nappa" leather upholstery, heated front seats, and Wolfsburg Edition badging.
Both the wagon and hatch also get active cruise control, autonomous emergency braking and blind spot monitoring as standard, features that are only available on the regular Golf R as part of the $1200 Driver Assistance Package.
The rest of the Wolfsburg Edition's spec sheets are in line with the normal Golf R. A panoramic glass sunroof is the only option available, and costs $1850 for both bodystyles.
Mechanically, the Wolfsburg editions are identical to the cooking-model Golf R.
Power is provided by a 206kW/380Nm turbocharged 2.0 litre four-cylinder engine, and both hatch and wagon are only available with a six-speed twin clutch automatic.
Thanks to its higher kerb weight, the Golf R Wagon Wolfsburg Edition is slightly slower to 100km/h, taking 5.2 seconds rather than the hatch's 5.0.
Fuel economy is slightly higher too at 7.2 l/100km, against the hatch's 7.1 l/100km claimed fuel consumption figure.
Volkswagen is now taking orders for both the Golf R Wolfsburg Edtion hatch and wagon, with deliveries of both set to begin in September.
Numbers of both are limited, though Volkswagen says "a few hundred" are on their way and more could come if demand outstrips supply.
At this stage, there are no plans to offer the Golf R Wagon in a non-special-edition form.
