Volkswagen is celebrating the 40th birthday of the Golf GTI with a limited edition GTI 40 Years model.

A slow release of information throughout the year revealed most of the new vehicle’s details, including the capped release of 400 DSG automatic models, and 100 manuals.

Motivation comes from a version of the GTI’s EA888 series motor, tuned up from the standard 165kW and 350Nm outputs, to a more enticing 195kW and 350Nm - with a technical specification that sees it more closely related to the Golf R.

That’s not all though, with a boost function lifting outputs further to 213kW and 380Nm for 10 seconds at a time in third gear and above.

Buyers are offered a choice of six-speed manual, or six-speed dual-clutch automatic, and, as with the rest of the GTI range, the 40 Years editions retains front wheel drive.

To help make better use of the available urge, the GTI 40 Years comes equipped with the electronically actuated locking differential from the GTI Performance, as well as borrowing its larger 340mm front and 310mm rear brake discs and adaptive suspension.

From the outside the GTI 40 Years stands apart thanks to a uniquely styled front bumper, taller rear spoiler, side sill extensions, and 40 Years decal package on the bottoms of the doors.

Uniquely styled 19x7.5 ‘Ruby’ alloy wheels complete the look, with the Ruby name selected by Aussie GTI enthusiasts to represent the traditional 40th anniversary gemstone, as well as the birthstone of July, the month the 40 Years special goes on sale.

In the inside, the 40 Years picks up a unique cloth and Alcantara seat trim with a honeycomb pattern, as well as honeycomb-finish trims on the dash and doors. The sports steering wheel also comes wrapped in Alcantara, with a red 12 o’clock marker.

Standard equipment beyond the usual GTI features includes adaptive cruise control, front assist with city emergency brake, blind spot monitor and rear traffic alert.
