Skoda's all-new third generation Superb sedan (well, liftback really) and wagon are now on sale in Australia, offering limo-like dimensions and plenty of high-end features at an affordable price.
The range begins with the $39,990 Superb 162TSI sedan, which utilises the same 162kW/350Nm turbocharged 2.0 litre engine as the Volkswagen Golf GTI. The diesel Superb 140TDI sits in the middle of the range and the powerful 206kW Superb 4x4 is the flagship at $50,990.
Opting for the wagon bodystyle adds $1700 to the price tag.
Skoda has dispensed with multiple model grades for the new Superb, instead offering all variants in a single, high-featured specification. Three option packages are available though, with even more technology, comfort or styling upgrades for Skoda's most premium offering to date.
Standard equipment is generous no matter which model you're in, and Skoda has taken the extra step of equipping all Superbs with potentially life-saving autonomous emergency braking and active cruise control as standard.
That's in addition to the standard partial Alcantara upholstery, 18-inch alloys, tri-zone climate control, heated front seats, powered driver's seat, front and rear parking sensors, reversing camera, bi-xenon headlamps, privacy glass and rear window sunblinds.
Infotainment is handled by an 8.0-inch colour touchscreen display with satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, a 64GB on-board music storage drive, Bluetooth audio and telephony and two USB charging points/audio inputs.
Nine airbags are standard on all models - dual front, front and rear side, full-length curtain and driver's knee.
Move into the range-topping Superb 4x4 and you gain 19-inch alloys, steering wheel gearshift paddles, a 15mm lower sports suspension, drive mode selection, keyless entry and ignition and LED interior ambient lighting.
Want more? The Image Pack brings the Superb 4x4's extra features to the 162TSI and 140TDI, while the Tech Pack adds eletronically adjustable suspension, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, a high-end Canton sound system, self-parking, rear traffic alert and Skoda's "traffic jam assist": feature that helps you crawl through congestion.
The Comfort Pack sees the addition of perforated leather upholstery, heated rear seats, the addition of a ventilation function to the front seats and a power-adjustable front passenger seat (which is also adjustable from the rear).
Three engines motivate the Superb range - all of which displace 2.0 litres. The base 162TSI makes use of a 162kW/350Nm 2.0 litre turbo petrol four, the 140TDI has a 140kW/400Nm turbo diesel and the Superb 4x4 features a heady 206kW of power and 350Nm of torque from its turbo two-litre.
All engines come paired with a six-speed twin-clutch automatic as standard, with no manual trans offered. The FWD 162TSI and 140TDI will sprint to 100km/h in 7.0 and 7.7 seconds respectively, while the 4x4 is genuinely fast with its 5.8 second 0-100km/h time.
Fuel economy comes in at 6.4 l/100km on the combined cycle for the 162TSI, 4.8 l/100km for the 140TDI and 7.3 l/100km for the heavier and more powerful Superb 4x4. The wagon variants consume the same amount as the sedans.
Suspension hardware consists of MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link setup at the rear, with the 4x4 models receiving a 15mm lower sports-tuned setting for sharper handling.
Adaptive Chassis Control with electronically-adjustable dampers is available with the optional Tech Pack, and allows the driver to switch between a comfort-oriented suspension tune, a normal setting and a firmer, sportier suspension mode.
Brakes are Ventilated discs up front and solid discs at rear, with electric power steering. The Superb can tow up to 2000kg on a braked trailer - 2200kg if you go for the 4x4.
