MINI Australia has announced pricing and specifications for its fastest drop-top ever, the 2016 John Cooper Works Convertible. Starting at $54,900 for the manual-equipped model, the JCW Convertible costs a sizable $4600 less than the previous-gen JCW Cabrio.

Though it costs less, it offers more - especially in performance. Sprinting to 100km/h in a brisk 6.5 seconds, the 2016 MINI JCW Convertible automatic is 0.4 seconds faster than the last-generation manual, and just 0.2 seconds slower than the current-gen JCW hatch.

Top speed is a hair-ruffling 240km/h.

It’s the fastest MINI drop-top ever thanks to its 170kW/320Nm 2.0 litre turbo inline four. Power goes to the front wheels through a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic with paddle shifters, and an electronic differential lock and electronically-adjustable dampers are standard-fit.

Braking is provided by the same fixed four-piston front calipers and sliding rears as the hatch, and 18-inch alloys are fitted at all four corners.

Fuel economy is a claimed 6.2 l/100km on the combined cycle, an improvement of 1.4 l/100km over the previous generation automatic. The manual consumes 6.8 l/100km - a reduction of 0.4 l/100km.

It’s an entirely new chassis underneath, and “substantial” underbody bracing helps keep the JCW Convertible’s roofless body rigid. As with the regular MINI Cooper Convertible range, the previous model’s prominent rollover hoops have been deleted in favour of a pop-up rollover bar.

The roof mechanism gains a pseudo-sunroof mode, where the forward section is able to slide rearward 40cm while the rest of the fabric roof remains in place. Hold the roof button down, and the entire roof folds away electrically in just 18 seconds at speeds up to 30km/h.

Compared to its predecessor, the 2016 JCW Convertible offers up 36mm more rear shoulder room, 112mm more rear elbow room and 36mm extra knee room, plus 45 litres of additional luggage capacity - 215 litres with the roof up and 160 litres with it down.

Standard equipment is generous, and includes a colour head-up display with JCW-specific sports mode, a 12-speaker Harman/Kardon audio system with digital radio tuner, rain-sensing wipers, dusk-sensing LED headlamps, climate control, cruise control, JCW Sports seats, a reversing camera, sat-nav, an 8.8-inch colour infotainment display, front and rear parking sensors with park assist, reversing cameara and JCW-specific interior trim pieces.
