Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a mid-cycle update for its stylish CLA-Class and CLA Shooting Brake models, ahead of their official debut at the New York Auto Show.

The German carmaker describes the 2016 CLA models as “sporty [and] expressive”, with each bringing exterior updates along with new interior features and technology.

Outside, the 2016 CLA gets new bumpers, a diamond radiator grille, new alloy wheels, and a greater differentiation for AMG models.

Inside, there’s new seat trims and chrome-plated controls, while an enhanced mobile phone integration feature with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is on the options list.

Mercedes says the new diesel-powered CLA 180d BlueEFFICIENCY Edition is the “efficiency champion”, with figures of 80kW and 260Nm while sipping as little as 3.5 l/100km and emitting as low as 89 g/km of CO2.

Australia won’t be seeing that engine, however, assuming Mercedes continues with its current line-up consisting of the CLA 200, CLA 250 and AMG CLA 45 models. Mercedes, however, is yet to confirm which models we’ll see in Australia.

Power for the CLA 200 with its 1.6 litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine in overseas markets is unchanged at 115kW/250Nm, while fuel consumption is marginally better under European testing at 5.6 l/100km (down 0.1 l/100km).

The CLA 250 Sport retains its 160kW/350Nm 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, but again, fuel consumption is better off to the tune of 0.1 l/100km (now 6.6).

The AMG CLA 45 also draws its power from a 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, but owners will notice a few changes for 2016.

Power remains steady at 280kW, but torque rises from 450 to 475Nm. Fuel consumption is down from 7.4 to 6.9 l /100km.

There’s no shortage of models for overseas buyers, however, with no less than 11 variants in the mix including diesel- and petrol-powered models with front- or all-wheel-drive.

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz CLA and CLA Shooting Brake will be on display at the New York Auto Show, with an Australian arrival expected before the end of the year.
