This week, Mazda’s newest Mazda2 sedan joins the hatch model in showrooms, with the latter gaining a few small specification changes as part of a 2016 model-year update.

Specification rises slightly across the board, with reverse sensors now standard on the entire range, while midgrade Maxx models now boast a standard reversing camera.

At the top of the range the Genki hatch also picks up new headlights with LED running lights and an optional S-Pack interior. S-Pack equipped Genki's will gain off-white and black leather and cloth trim, as well as white door and dash decor panels panels, plus Smart City Brake Support.

Those looking to the new sedan range will find Neo and Maxx models available, with specification levels mirroring those of the five-door. At the rear the new boot holds a huge 440 litres of cargo.

Pricing remains at $14,990 for the Neo, moving up to $17,690 for the Maxx and topping out at $20,690 for the Genki.

Neo and Maxx sedans incur no cost penalty, priced the same as the hatch models. Adding a six-speed auto to any model adds an extra $2000.

Mechanical

Under the bonnet the current 1.5 litre engine carries over unchanged, and is available in two states of tune.

Neo models are powered by a version producing 79kW of power at 6000 rpm and 139Nm of torque at 4000 rpm. Fuel consumption is rated at 5.4 l/100km with a manual or 5.5 l/100km for the six speed automatic.

Maxx and Genki grades feature a high output version of the same engine that musters 81kW at 6000rpm and 141Nm at 4000rpm. Thanks to the addition of i-stop idle stop technology fuel consumption is slightly lower with 5.2 l/100km for the manual and 4.9 l/100km for the auto.

Both manual and automatic transmissions have six speeds, and the automatic also features a sport shift mode.

There’s no changes to suspension or steering, with the Mazda2’s electric power steering, and MacPherson strut front and torsion beam rear suspension carrying over unchanged.

Features

Small changes to the equipment list see the addition of reverse park sensors as standard across the range. Maxx models also pick up the seven-inch MZD connect infortainment system, six speakers, and a reverse camera.

Neo models can be optioned with a reverse camera for $778, while Smart City Brake Support is a $400 option across the range.
