The first shipment of the all-new Mazda CX-9 has arrived port-side in Australia ahead of the car’s official July launch, as pre-sales interest hits record levels for the brand.
Mazda reports that the new seven-seat SUV has recorded 55,000 inquiries so far, with 13,000 of those asking to be contacted by a Mazda dealer once the vehicle hits showroom floors.
That number surpasses any pre-launch interest in Mazda history, with last year’s record interest in the new MX-5, at 34,000 inquiries and 9,700 contact requests, blown out of the water.
“The response to brand-new Mazda CX-9 has been remarkable,” said Mazda Australia marketing director Alastair Doak.
“Never have we experienced such pre-launch interest in a Mazda nameplate.”
The first shipment of CX-9s includes 60 vehicles, set to attend media and dealer launch activities, but Mazda will certainly be quickly ramping-up numbers to get dealerships stocked for launch.
Last month the CX-9’s primary competitors, the Toyota Kluger and Nissan Pathfinder sold 946 vehicles and 347 vehicles respectively. If the initial interest in the CX-9 translates into ongoing sales, that opposition may have a fight on their hands.
Like those two vehicles, the new CX-9 is petrol-powered only, however where the Kluger is powered by a V6 and the Pathfinder brings a choice of V6 or supercharged petrol-electric hybrid, the CX-9 offers a newly developed 2.5 litre turbocharged version of Mazda’s SkyActiv engine range.
Already Mazda tops the small and medium SUV segments with the CX-3 and CX-5 and will no doubt be looking to repeat that success with the new CX-9, however both smaller SUVs provide a diesel engine option.
Available with both two and all-wheel-drive, the CX-9’s 2.5 litre turbo generates 170kW of power and 420Nm of torque. It is equipped with engine start/stop and a capacitor system to capture energy recovered during braking to relieve alternator load and save fuel.
Fuel consumption is as low as 8.4 l/100km for two-wheel-drive variants, and 8.8 l/100km when equipped with all-wheel-drive, compared with 11.0 l/100km for the current 3.7 litre V6 CX-9 which generates more power, but less torque (204kW/367Nm).
The CX-9’s four model range includes Sport, Touring, GT, and Azami variants all of which will be offered with seven seats as standard.
