Ford's updated Focus arrives in Australia, with a refreshed line-up, and pared-back powertrain choice.

A new turbocharged 1.5 litre four-pot engine now powers the mainstream Focus range, while rejigged suspension, steering, and noise-deadening aim to increase refinement

A range restructure sees the base-grade Ambiente model dropped, leaving the Focus range comprised of the Trend, Sport, Titanium and the (already updated) high-performance ST flagship. The new price of entry, starting at the Trend model, rises to $23,390.

The deletion of the Ambiente model, as well as the discontinuation of previously available diesel models sees the range of Focus models reduced from 12 down to just 6.

The 1.5 litre EcoBoost four-cylinder that replaces the old 2.0 litre naturally-aspirated four in the current range will offer more oomph, as well as better fuel economy.

Power peaks at 132 kW with torque topping out at 240 Nm, resulting in net gains of 7kW and 38Nm over the 2.0. Average fuel consumption varies between 5.8 l/100km and 6.4 l/100km depending on the model, an improvement of between 0.3 to 0.8 l/100km.

The suspension of all models now features retuned shock absorbers along with stiffer bushings and springs. A more rigid front structure also helps improve handling, as does a retuned electronic power steering system and stability control program.

All new Focus models will come equipped with Ford's SYNC2 infotainment unit as standard. Built around an 8-inch colour touchscreen display, SYNC2 is the primary interface for the phone, audio climate control and sat-nav.

The new range also features similar interior revisions to the German-built Focus ST, with better cupholders, a new climate control console and steering wheel design.

Ford's MyKey system is also standard across the range, allowing owners to restrict specific sets of keys to certain speeds and music volumes (perfect for parents of driving-age teens). A full equipment breakdown is listed below:
