All body-styles will be available in M Competition guise except the 3 Series wagon, but including the M3 sedan along with the M4 Coupe and Convertible.
BMW says the new Competition models lift the range of available M3s and M4s to six, but considering all are available with manual or automatic transmissions - including the new Competitions - the range is effectively doubled to 12.
Each Competition model commands a $4000 premium over its ‘regular’ M equivalent, with the extra cash giving buyers a 14kW boost from the TwinPower turbocharged 3.0 litre six-cylinder petrol engine to 331kW. The torque figure remains at 550Nm.
The extra go sees the 0-100km/h time shrink to 4.0 seconds for sedan and coupe models when fitted with the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic - an improvement of 0.1 seconds over the standard M3 and M4.
Likewise, the Convertible is also 0.1 seconds faster with the Competition pack matched with the auto at 4.3 seconds. Opting for the six-speed manual (a no-cost option) adds 0.2 seconds to each of these times, but again, each are 0.1 seconds faster than the regular M models.
Other Competition goodies include “bespoke settings” for the Adaptive M Suspension, electronic stability control and Active M Differential, along with 20-inch alloy wheels wearing different sized tyres front to rear.
The exterior receives BMW Individual Shadow Line trim including high-gloss black BMW ‘kidney’ grilles, side gills, exhaust tailpipes and rear-model badging. Naturally, a sports exhaust with quad tailpipes is also included.
Inside, the Competition models get lightweight M leather seats with woven striped M colour seat belts to complement the existing interior tech, including head-up display, extended leather trim (including dashboard) and extended smartphone connectivity.
The 2016 BMW M3 and M4 Competition models arrive this month, priced from $144,900 for M3 Competition Sedan, $154,900 for M4 Competition Coupe and $165,900 for M4 Competition Convertible - plus on-road costs.
