Arriving at the same time as the much bigger X5 xDrive40e in May, the BMW 330e will be BMW's second mainstream plug-in hybrid product to hit the market this year, as well as its most affordable at $71,900.

Sitting $2000 above the conventionally-engined BMW 330i - with which it shares much of its standard equipment levels - the 330i boasts an identical 185kW power output as the 330i but a substantial 70Nm more torque thanks to its 65kW/250Nm electric-assistance motor.

With the 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine and electric-drive motor working in concert, the 330i produces a total of 185kW and 420Nm.

Combined cycle fuel consumption is ultra-low at just 2.1 l/100km, but like the X5 xDrive40e the 330e is able to consume even less should you make more use of its electric-only drive mode.

With its 7.6kWh lithium-ion battery pack providing enough charge for 37km of motoring and being able to be fully recharged in under four hours, BMW expects most owners will be able to drive their daily commute without consuming any petrol at all.

And while it loses 110 litres of luggage capacity to the battery pack, the 330e still retains a full-sized boot passthrough and 40:20:40 split rear seatbacks to help make the most of its 370 litre cargo space.

The 330e's standard specification levels largely mirror those of the 330i, with 19-inch alloys, adaptive suspension and BMW's higher-end navigation system all standard.

  • Eight-speed automatic transmission with gearshift paddles
