2015 VOLVO XC90
It has yet to hand down any official details, but Volvo has offered fans a glimpse of another new concept this week: the next XC90 SUV.
Volvo last hinted at the look of its big new SUV in 2011, but with new design lead Thomas Ingenlath coming on-board last year, the wagon's styling has undergone some major changes.
While the last series of sketches word a look inspired by the stately Universe and You concepts, this latest offering exudes power, with a style to match any upmarket wagon.
Like the Coupé revealed today, the new XC90 concept wears the familiar Volvo grille design, flanked by slender headlights enriched with T-shaped LEDs, sitting above sharp winglets in the front bumper.
The rear view is less clear at this stage, although it is obvious that Volvo's trademark tail-lamp design will hold sway here, reaching up into the D-pillar to dominate the rear-end.
A sharp character line can be seen extending from the tail-light, likely running high along the SUV's profile and extending right through to the headlights.
The new XC90 will be one of the largest models to ride on the new Volvo SPA platform, and the carmaker says all of its new offerings will weight around 100 to 150kg less than their existing counterparts.
The company's new four-cylinder Drive-E engines will also feature, and the XC90 will undoudtedly benefit from a hybrid setup for more power in up-spec models.
For now, the nearly ten year-old first-generation XC90 is expected to soldier on, although one last major update could appear before the all-new model appears in 2014.
Until then, Australian buyers can look to the new V40 hatch for a taste of the brand's latest styling and technologies.
Volvo has also confirmed development of a new compact platform - again in partnership with parent Geely - with production of most models on the architecture expected to take place in China.
