Volvo has rolled out a first look at the exterior styling of its new XC90, revealing the big SUV’s headlight design.

This tightly cropped image hints at the extent of the recent XC Coupe concept's influence on the new XC90, while also lining up perfectly with a much earlier teaser.

Nearly one year ago, a media presentation in the US delivered shadowy preview images of the new XC90, highlighting the new model’s full front-end look.

Clear in those images were the same t-bone LED daytime lights featured in this new preview (which Volvo has dubbed “Thor’s hammer”), flanking the broad Volvo grille and a sports-styled bumper.

The release of this latest preview also suggests that we can take last year’s tail-light preview as an accurate view of what’s to come - and likely what we can expect from Volvo’s next teaser.

Volvo also touched again on its new Scaleable Platform Architecture (SPA), which will underpin both this new XC90.

The platform is the result of four years and €8.2 billion in development, and Volvo says buyers can expect to see a number of new SPA-based models over the coming years.
