Volkswagen’s refreshed Scirocco R is now officially on sale in Australia, after first touching down in October last year.
The Scirocco R's continuation into 2015 comes in response to feedback from buyers and dealers, Volkswagen's Karl Gehling told TMR earlier in 2014.
Pricing for the refreshed range kicks off from $45,990 for the six-speed manual model, topping out at $48,490 for the DSG auto - marking a $2000 price drop for both models.
Revealed early last year, the updated Scirocco brings a sharpened look that keeps the three-door’s styling in step with Volkswagen’s latest design language.
There’s sharper headlights and a new grille, along with a more angular look to the now LED-loaded tail lights.
The bumpers at both ends have been blessed with a bolder look, and the new Golf R’s five-spoke 19-inch rims prop up each corner.
The updates continue in the cabin, where the Scirocco R has been given a refreshed dash design that includes a new steering wheel, new switches, and a gauge pod atop the centre stack.
Power in the local R is again provided by the existing 188kW/330Nm 2.0 litre turbo four, this time leaving the Scirocco noticeably behind the Golf R that now offers 206kW and 380Nm in Australian trim.
But, with the three-door positioned between the Golf R and the more affordable 162kW Golf GTI, the Scirocco R’s figures are in-line with that arrangement.
Importantly, torque delivery in the refreshed Scirocco is improved, with maximum twist now available between 2400 and 5200 rpm, compared to 2500-5000rpm in the outgoing line.
The Scirocco R is again available in six-speed manual and DSG auto form, with power sent to the front wheels only.
Suspension is by a strut-type setup at the front, matched to a multi-link arrangement out back.
Brakes are ventilated 345mm discs at the front and 310mm discs at the rear.
Acceleration numbers for the refreshed hatch haven’t been released for Australia, but we can likely expect the existing model’s 6.2 manual and 6.0 DSG figures to carry over.
Features with the 2015 Scirocco will include a ‘matte chrome’ door mirror caps, Bi-Xenon headlights with LED daytime lights, 19-inch alloys in front of black R-stamped calipers, sports suspension, Adaptive Chassis Control and the XDL electronic differential.
Inside there’s R-specific sports seats, sports steering wheel, a 6.5 inch touchscreen display, a multifunction trip computer, satellite navigation, iPod/USB/Bluetooth connectivity.
A reversing camera is standard, along with front and rear parking sensors.

Why do we only get the R? I would like a Scirocco, but want a cheaper lower spec model, like they get in Europe.
Even South Africa gets all of the Scirocco models, have no idea why Volkswagen Australia decided on this model alone. Would love to have this in the 103TSI Highline version offered on the Golf 7
Most likely came down to cannibalising the golf sales. They weren't going to bring out the Scirocco at all because they thought it would steal sales away from the gti.
Same here. Nobody needs 188kW but there are plenty of us out there you want something that looks this sexy and gets along reasonably well. That's why I bought an Astra GTC Sport - the 1.6 turbo is more than fast enough to make the car real fun on a good stretch of road without forcing me to deal with torque steer or massive wheel spin (or the electronic nannying to reduce it). You just have to see how well Holden did selling the last Astra Coupe in all the same spec levels as the hatch to know that it could work for Scirocco and Megane, too. In fact, I'd have taken a 118TSi Scirocco over my GTC Sport if it had been an option, it's way better looking and would probably be in the same ballpark, fun-wise.
Motormouth, am curious, have you had any mechanical issues with your Astra, specifically in the steering and or suspension department?
How many blue sciroccos were bought to Aus since its realise? Thank u
