Photos of Volkswagen’s next-generation Passat have surfaced online this week, revealing the new sedan in its long-wheelbase Chinese trim.

Captured by China’s Autohome website, these cropped shots come just hours after the company’s ‘New Midsize Coupe’ offering appeared in its production skin.

A shorter Western version of the new Passat has already been spied testing on European roads in recent months, wearing heavy vinyl camouflage all-round.

But, despite the full-body disguise, it is clear that the sedan seen testing in April will showcase a largely identical profile to this Chinese model.

Likewise, front- and rear-end styling appears to be the same, although the model caught in Europe features a smoked tail-light design with LED internals.

As expected, the new Passat takes its cues from the subtly evolved Volkswagen styling language, including the letterbox grille and no-nonsense headlights.

But, - like the new Golf hatch - the 2015 Passat has been given more imposing proportions, with flared guards, sculpted lids at both ends, and a sharp character line through the profile.

The new model also appears wider than before, thanks in part to the meatier guards and the more coupe-like roofline.

Details for this new Chinese version have not been revealed, but recent reports of the European Passat suggest it will share much of its technology with the Golf - including turbocharged petrol and diesel engines and a plug-in hybrid, similar to the eGolf.

Reports also hint at a new diesel, equipped with extreme high-pressure injectors and matched to a new ten-speed DSG auto.

The Passat R36 performer with six-cylinder power is also rumoured to be making a comeback, with the model again expected to feature all-wheel-drive.

Passat wagon and CC models are also due for an upgrade, with the wagon expected to be offered in AWD guise in the Alltrack version.

Volkswagen introduced a light update to its Passat range in Australia around a year ago, bringing a more powerful entry-level diesel engine to the line-up.

Watch for more details on the new Passat to surface in the coming months.
