Volkswagen's mystery Golf R-styled performance wagon has been spied testing again this week, adding fuel to speculation of a new production model.

Injecting a little excitement into the load-lugging end of its new Golf range, the hot wagon has been caught twice now - both times without a shred of camouflage.

It’s unusual for a carmaker to offer such a revealing preview of an as-yet unannounced project, but if a Golf R Wagon is indeed bound for showrooms, we aren’t complaining.

The prototype spied this week wears the familiar face of the new Golf R hatch, including the unique bumper design and the R-badged grille.

Split-spoke wheels prop up each corner, and while there’s no R badging on the tailgate, there’s at least a pair of sports exhaust tips at each corner.

If the Golf R Wagon sticks to the formula, we can expect power to be provided the 221kW and 380Nm turbo mill that drives the hatch and the Audi S3 range.

Of course, if this wagon comes to Australia, expect its heart to be detuned to the same 206kW output that the local Audi S3 models get.

The wagon should also get the same 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, but will it get the choice of a six-speed manual or - perhaps more likely - a DSG-only package?

Time will tell.
