Recent reports suggest Subaru will no longer offer a wagon version of its Liberty midsizer, revealed last week in its new sixth-generation sedan body.

Instead, it is believed that Subaru will direct wagon drivers to options either side of the Liberty: the smaller Levorg, and a new version of the high-riding Outback.

(Although reports elsewhere suggest this is specific to the US market only, with others - including Australia - still likely to see a new Liberty wagon.)

Historically, the Outback has been a jacked-up and ruggedised Liberty wagon, but if reports of that model’s demise prove true, we could soon see a markedly different look to the Outback.

We might also expect a bigger Outback than ever before, possibly replacing the Exiga and Tribeca in a consolidated new Subaru line-up.

News last year of the Tribeca’s retirement brought confirmation that Subaru will return to the seven-seat SUV market - although that announcement had a ring of “eventually” to it, and there’s no guarantee the next Outback is that new model.

We could know sooner rather than later what Subaru is planning for the Outback, with reports this week suggesting a debut at April’s New York Auto Show is on the cards.

If nothing else, we can likely expect the new Outback to utilise the 2014 Liberty’s platform, along with its 2.5 and 3.6 litre boxer engines and CVT automatic transmission.

Subaru is also unlikely to stray far from its updated styling language, introduced with the new WRX and Levorg models and again last week with the new Liberty.

Expect the usual enhancements, though: a taller ride height and a body clad in bash guards and scuff panels.
