Smart’s all-new ForTwo and reborn ForFour city cars have now made their official debut, following the circulation of leaked images late yesterday.
As expected, the new ForTwo retains the same total length of its predecessor, while the ForFour is now shorter than before.
Both compact cars promise more interior space however, with new-generation manufacturing allowing for thinner materials without compromising safety.
The new ForTwo measures 2.69 metres long, 1.66m wide (100mm wider than before) and 1.55 tall, riding on a 1873mm wheelbase. The ForFour is longer at 3.49m long, mounted on a 2494mm wheelbase.
The new cars also boast a wider 1660mm track, thanks in part to the fact that both Smarts share their platform with Renault’s new Twingo hatch.
But while the Renault and Smart cars share a common architecture, today's unveiling confirms that very few (if any) of the exterior elements appear to be shared across the two brands.
It is clear however that both of the new Smart cars share identical styling, featuring an evolutionary design - as previewed in a telling teaser video last week - and styling cues from across the brand’s most recent concepts.
Two-tone paintwork again dominates the exterior, with the familiar contrasting C-pillar extending through the body and across the roofline.
Large single-unit lights are showcased at both ends, and a wide perforated body-coloured grille sits in the centre of each model’s face.
The interior of the new Smart cars introduces a fresh new look, with a bold and curvaceous dash replacing the slab-like design of its nearly eight year-old predecessor.
A scooped-out centre section is fronted by a large display panel that sits proud of the dash, and these images reveal that at least two versions of the display will be offered.
A JBL audio system is also featured, with eight speakers in the ForTwo and 12 speakers in the ForFour.
The driver’s view has been given a complete makeover for this new model, dominated by a three-spoke sports-style steering wheel and a new take on the previous model’s large speedo display.
The steering wheel features multi-function controls on the spokes, and a 3.5 inch display is mounted in the instrument cluster.
And as with the exterior, a variety of colour options will be offered in the cabin, from the dash through to the seats and door cards.
The second row of the ForFour model reveals, as expected, a two-seater arrangement with the passenger spaces divided by thin centre console and cup holder.
Both cars feature the Renault Twingo’s naturally-aspirated 51kW 1.0 litre three-cylinder petrol engine, along with a turbocharged 66kW 0.9 litre unit. A naturally-aspirated 45kW engine will join the range later.
All, of course, are rear-mounted, and power is sent to the rear wheels.
"In the planning phase we were clear that we wanted to retain the rear engine for the new smart, so as to continue to exploit the vehicles' strengths to the full in the city," Daimler's Jorg Prigl said.
"On this basis, we then developed the new Fortwo and Forfour together with our partner, Renault."
A manual transmission will be offered for the first time in the form of a five-speed shifter, and a dual-clutch Getrag six-speed auto will also be offered.
Both cars feature MacPherson struts at the front and a de Dion rear suspension package. There's new guide bearings at the front, along with twin-tube dampers and helical springs at the rear.
The new ForTwo also now boasts the smallest turning circle of any current production car, coming in at just 6.95 metres. The ForFour's is wider, but not by much, at 7.3 metres.
The new Smart range is understood to be under consideration for a local launch, but the company has confirmed it is still considering the business case for Smart in Australia.
If an Australian launch is secured, expect pricing to start at around $20,000.
The current Fortwo, still available in Australia, is priced from $18,990 drive-away, but just two were sold in June, with only 38 year-to-date sales on the ledger.
