2015 NISSAN NAVARA

UPDATE: The new Navara has now been revealed. Details here.

Nissan's chief product planner Andy Palmer has confirmed that an all-new fourth-generation Navara pickup will be announced within weeks.

The new Navara will replace both the current but ageing D22 and D40 Navara models, with dimensions close to the D40 but with more curves than the D40’s American inspired exterior.

Expect all-new styling inside and out, all-new drivetrain options and an overall weight reduction, as fuel efficiency is high on the list of priorities.

The fourth-generation Navara will be based on a new global ladder-frame chassis rather than the current model's Titan chassis, making it more efficient and cheaper to produce.

We expect further fuel-efficiency gains will be made with a switch from the current Navara’s 2.5-litre YD-series turbo-diesel to a 2.8-litre TD4 Cummins engine.

Nissan dropped a large clue when it revealed its Cummins-powered DieselRunner concept at the Chicago motor show in February.

The 2.8-litre Cummins diesel is similar to the one currently available in the Foton Tunland ute. In the Tunland it is rated as using 8.4L/100km and produces 120kW/360Nm.

The YD series engine in the current D40 Navara uses 9.3L/100km and produces from 103kW/356Nm to 140kW/450Nm, depending on its state of tune.

In addition to a manual gearbox option, we expect to see the same ZF 8HP70 eight-speed automatic fitted to the The DieselRunner concept being made available in the production Navara.

Palmer has confirmed that the new generation Navara will built at Nissan’s new $360 million Thailand plant and that production is expected to get underway later this year. The new plant has the capacity to build 370,000 new Navaras a year.

Palmer also confirmed that Nissan will once again be basing an off-road seven-seat SUV on the new Navara.

It won’t wear the Pathfinder name this time around - the new Pathfinder is now a cross-over SUV based on a monocoque chassis - it will instead be a more rugged 4x4 capable vehicle.

The Navara is expected to join the all-new Mitsubishi Triton on-sale in Australia at the end of this year.
