Ford’s next Mustang will be smaller, lighter and more agile; that's according to the latest round of rumours and speculation (adding to the old round of rumours and speculative reportage).

US website Inside Line suggests that the new model will draw influence from Ford’s Evos concept, unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Ford has already revealed that the Evos hints at future styling themes, and this latest report suggests the Mustang will emulate the concept's streamlined profile while retaining familiar details like the triple-lens taillights and long-bonnet proportions.

The report is accompanied by renderings that suggest how this styling amalgamation could manifest on the upcoming model.

TMR reported last month that the new model will be developed in line with Ford's ‘One Ford’ corporate strategy, meaning it will suit a wide range of global markets and share components with a variety of other models.

If the report proves correct, these styling refinements will help the Mustang appeal to European (or even Australian) markets, more attuned to the taut lines of the BMW 3 Series Coupe or Audi A5.

A less bulky design is likely to also yield significant weight reduction and aerodynamic improvements.

Dynamically, the new model is expected to benefit from independent rear suspension, which is another key area where previous Mustangs have lagged behind Europe.

Mechanically, the new model is expected to continue with the existing V6 and V8 options, with the ‘Coyote’ range of V8 engines introduced in the 2011 model year.

An entry model powered by Ford’s 2.0 litre four-cylinder EcoBoost engine is also expected, which would help Ford’s compliance with the looming 2016 updated US Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) regulations.

The new model is expected to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Mustang nameplate, with an unveiling at the 2014 New York Auto Show.
