Mazda’s new 2 hatch comes a step closer to its Geneva concept debut, with an official new teaser sketch surfacing online today.

The artwork, although overly stylised, offers a first full look at the new hatch that should hit showrooms early in 2015.

Dubbed ‘Hazumi’, the new hatch concept draws on the look of Mazda’s earlier Shinari, Takeri and Minagi concepts - show-cars that eventually became the new Mazda6 and CX-5 SUV.

The rendering’s exaggerated lines suggest that buyers can look forward to a more compact take on the larger 3 hatch, with an extended bonnet and a fast rising belt-line.

In concept form, the Hazumi’s grille frame will extend back into the narrow and exposed headlights, but we can likely expect this area to be simplified before production.

Little has been revealed about the new Mazda2, although reports in the past year have claimed that the light hatch will ride on a shortened version of the larger Mazda3 and CX-5 platform.

For now, the carmaker has promised to launch five new models between now and 2016, and we can expect those to at least include the new Mazda2, the next MX-5 and a replacement for the big CX-9.

We should also see Mazda's new 'Skyactiv 2' engines in the new hatch, outlined in an interview with Mazda's powertrain boss Mitsuo Hitomi.
