Kia’s updated Rio light car for 2015 is now available in Australia, bringing refreshed styling, interior updates and suspension improvements.

While visual exterior changes are minimal, Kia Australia’s Kevin Hepworth said midway through last year that the refreshed model would bring significant changes under the skin.

The 2015 Rio was first unveiled at last year’s Paris Motor Show, and now arrives in Australia with a revised model line-up.

A new variant makes its debut for 2015, with the ‘S Premium’ replacing Si as the mid-range model.

The S is still the entry-level variant, while the Si replaces the SLS at the top of the model range; for now.

Later in the year, a new Sport variant will arrive along with the SLi model.

All 2015 Rios get a new front and rear bumper design, new grille pattern and metallic-look headlights, while ‘Urban Blue’ becomes the eighth and newest paint finish.

Inside, there’s a new centre fascia and audio unit design in all models.

The major changes to the 2015 model come via a suspension tune, with the Kia Australia team further refining the Rio for local conditions.

Kia says ride comfort and handling have been improved, which in turn has sharpened steering feel.

The range kicks off with the three-door S six-speed manual, powered by a 79kW/135Nm 1.4 litre petrol engine.

The manual S three-door is priced from $15,990 while the S five-door starts at $16,990; plus on-road costs. An optional four-speed automatic adds $2000 to each model.

Stepping up to the five-door S Premium adds 15-inch alloy wheels, front fog lamps and electric folding side mirrors.

The S Premium also gets cruise control and a six-speaker audio system along with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. Prices start at $17,690 plus on-roads for the manual with the automatic adding $2000.

Topping the 2015 Rio range for now is the Si, available only as a five-door with a six-speed automatic and priced from $21,490 plus on-roads.

The Si is powered by a larger 1.6 litre petrol engine producing 103kW/167Nm, and gains 16-inch alloys.

The 2015 Kia Rio is available now.
