Fuel Consumption Improvements
Ford has today outlined changes that sees fuel use in the entry six-cylinder Falcon sedan reduced by 9 percent, dropping from 9.9 to 9.0 l/100km.
The up-spec six-cylinder petrol XR6 auto and G6E models also see improvements, with fuel consumption reduced from 9.9 to 9.5 l/100km.
Although relatively small, Ford notes that these improvements, when measured against the 2004 BA MkII range - powered by the newly introduced ‘Barra’ I6 engine with four- and five-speed autos - these figures mark a 22 percent improvement.
“This is a significant story for our customers,” Ford’s Falcon and Territory boss David Wilkinson said.
“Achieving good fuel efficiency in modern cars is inherently more challenging because of added weight from contributing things like extra features and added safety equipment.”
“The extensive use of high-strength light-weight steels in the 2014 Falcon helps but the further refinement of the I6 petrol engine is testament to the continual process of improvement being done here at Ford. The in-line six cylinder engine in the Falcon is recognised as one of the most refined six cylinder engines around with a great balance of smooth power and fuel efficiency.”
Ford credits the improved figures to the wider adoption of the EcoBoost’s lighter and more efficient 6HP21 ZF six-speed auto, now featured with all I6-powered models - including the EcoLPi.
The carmaker notes however that the 6HP26 auto will continue with the V8 and turbocharged I6 models.
The Falcon range now also boasts the same refined aerodynamics pack introduced with the four-cylinder Falcon EcoBoost, along with 16-inch low rolling-resistance tyres.
