Hot on the heels of its recently launched ATS-V range, Cadillac has confirmed it will unveil the all-new CTS-V at next month’s Detroit Auto Show.

While the first-ever ATS-V is positioned as Cadillac’s rival to the BMW M3, M4 and AMG C 63, the CTS-V will again square off against larger Germans like the M5 and E 63.

Details for the new top-shelf CTS are still to be revealed, although reports suggest we could see power provided by GM’s 6.2 litre supercharged V8.

The same mill, an all-new engine called ‘LT4’, delivers a massive 466kW in the new Corvette Z06 flagship coupe. (While Australia’s 430kW HSV GTS is driven instead by the ‘LSA’ supercharged 6.2 V8.)

In CTS-V form, power is expected to land somewhere a little below the hero Corvette’s numbers, likely around the 445kW mark.

Other reports suggest GM may also look to its coming 4.5 litre twin-turbo V8 - previewed with last year’s Cadillac Elmiraj concept - but with power dialled well past the 370kW rumoured to be the ‘base’ output for that engine.

Whatever direction GM takes, it will be looking to better the 412kW offered with BMW’s M5 in standard form, and the 410kW of Mercedes-AMG’s E 63.

The recent ATS-V like previews GM’s intentions, with its own 340kW turbo six comfortably outdoing BMW’s 317kW M3 - although not quite matching the 350kW of AMG’s new C 63.

Watch for more on the new CTS-V to surface in the coming weeks.
