A facelift to BMW's still-fresh 1 Series is right around the corner, with spy photos early last year revealing that a new look is in the works.

Captured in early June, TMR's photos show that the small premium hatch is in line for an update that will bring it closer in style to the more recent 2 Series Coupe.

The finer details of the 1 hatch's new face remain hidden behind BMW's familiar camouflage for now, but a new rendering from 'photochopper' Theophilus Chin offers a look at what we might see later this year.

For his 'concept', Chin has masked the face of the new 2 Series Coupe directly onto the 1 Series Hatch - and we won't be the least bit surprised if that's precisely what's to come from BMW.

The lights of the new 2 Series, while steering away from the connected 'grille-to-headlight' look now appearing across the BMW range, nonetheless add a more powerful image to the little Bimmer's face.

Styling of the 1 Series hatch will likely remain otherwise unchanged, and being a relatively new model, dramatic mechanical changes are also unlikely.

Watch for the updated 1 Series to appear in the coming months, alongside its two-door 2 Series sibling.
