2014 WORLD CAR OF THE YEAR

Judges for this year’s World Car of the Year awards have whittled the list to just three finalists in each category, drawn from the 45 candidates announced last month.

The shortlist, revealed this week at the Geneva Motor Show, sees Mazda’s new 3 small car facing off against two premium contenders for the overall WCotY award: the new Audi A3, and BMW’s 4 Series range.

(The Mazda3’s resilience in this year’s awards is no surprise: our experience with the new model suggests it will be a solid contender for TMR’s Best Buy 2014 award.)

The news also puts to rest any hopes that Peugeot might replicate Volkswagen’s 2013 result by winning both WCotY and European Car of the Year, which the new 308 picked up last week.
