Volkswagen has won the World Car Of The Year award in three of the last four years, including last year’s award for the Volkswagen Golf.

For the 2014 award however, the German carmaker has failed to make the shortlist - but there's no shortage of worthy contenders on this year's roster.

Thirty cars have been named on the initial list for the 2014 award, with Toyota and BMW picking up three spots each. Two positions each go to Ford, Renault and Peugeot.

The remaining 20 nominations are made up of everything from the Hyundai i10 to the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

To be eligible, cars must be offered for sale on at least two continents between January 1, 2013 and May 30, 2014.

The tenth World Car Of The Year Award will be handed down at the 2014 New York Auto Show in April next year.
