Volkswagen’s all-new, sharper and lighter 2014 Golf Wagon arrives in Australia this week, priced from $25,540.

Joining the new Golf hatch range that landed early last year, the new wagon is available with two petrol engines and a single range-topping diesel.

Volkswagen’s DSG automatic transmission is standard across the range, and trim grades range from entry Golf Wagon to the familiar Comfortline and Highline options.

On the styling front, the new wagon is more aligned with the wider range’s look: where the previous model wore unique tail-lights, the model’s rear-end is all Golf.

Now looking more like a stretched version of the regular hatch, the Golf Wagon gains a 307mm rear overhang extension and deeper tailgate.

Mechanical Package

There are three engine options with the new Golf Wagon: 90TSI and 103TSI petrol, and 110TDI diesel.

The petrol engines are matched to seven-speed DSG autos, while the 110TDI gets a six-speed DSG.

The 90TSI is powered by a 1.4 litre petrol engine producing 90kW at 5000rpm and 200Nm from 1400rpm.

Fuel consumption is rated at 5.3 l/100km, and the 0-100km/h time is listed at 9.7 seconds.

Moving up to the 103TSI models sees power in the 1.4 litre petrol engine boosted to 103kW at 4500rpm and 250Nm from 1500rpm.

For this model, Volkswagen claims an even lower 5.2 l/100km for fuel consumption, while the 0-100km/h time falls to 8.9 seconds.

Topping the range is the 110TDI diesel, its 2.0 litre engine delivering 110kW from 3500rpm and 320Nm from 1750 to 3000rpm.

Fuel consumption for the diesel is rated at 4.7 l/100km, and the 0-100km/h time is listed at a 103TSI matching 8.9 seconds.

Suspension in the Golf Wagon is by MacPherson struts at the front, with a multi-link setup at the rear.

Like the regular Golf hatch, the new Golf Wagon also features Volkswagen’s trick XDL transverse differential lock as standard on all models.

In the Golf Wagon, the system is enhanced to become XDL+, extended to all unbraked driving states.

Features & Dimensions

Standard equipment in the new Golf Wagon largely mirrors the features offered with the hatch range.

In the 90TSI, this includes a 5.8 inch ‘Composition Media’ display, cruise control, Bluetooth/USB connectivity, tilt and reach adjustable steering, height adjustable front seat, dust and pollen filter, black roof rails, tinted windows.

Safety features include seven airbags, electronic stability program, multi-collision braking system, and electronic park brake with auto-hold.

Moving up to the 90TSI Comfortline a rear-view camera, parking distance sensors front and rear, 16-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, auto wipers and headlights, auto dimming mirror, chrome roof rails and under-seat drawers at the front.

In the top Highline-badged 103TSI and 110TDI models, the feature set grows to include comfort sports seats with Alcantara and fabric trim, ‘Discover Media’ satellite navigation, 17-inch alloy wheels and front fog lights, along with carpet floor mats and interior ambient lighting.

Depending on the starting trim grade, options include a panoramic glass roof, Discover Media sat nav, Bi-Xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, Vienna leather-appointed trim, anti-theft alarm and the Driver Assistance Package.

Driver Assistance includes adaptive cruise control, front assist with City Emergency Braking, Proactive Occupant Protection System, Park Assist 2 and Driving Profile Selection.

As with the hatch, the Golf Wagon is lighter than its predecessor, shedding as much as 165kg, while its petrol and diesel engines are up to 15 percent more-efficient than before.

Rear storage has grown 100 litres to offer a sizeable 605 litres with the rear seats upright, while lowering the rear backrests and loading to the ceiling boosts capacity to 1620 litres - up from 1495 in the old model.
