Volkswagen will offer the first official preview of its next-generation Golf R hero in just two weeks, ahead of a world premiere at March's Geneva Motor Show.
The debut of the new R will complete the core trinity of Golf models, following the unveiling last year of the regular model, and a thinly-veiled 'concept' of the new GTI hot hatch.
Although the current Golf R shares its engine with the outgoing Audi S3, the new model is expected to pack a more powerful version of the EA888 engine that drives the GTI and a number of Audi models.
The new GTI is expected to debut with the same 162kW of power it packs in concept mode, but reports suggest the next R will deliver as much as 215kW - up from the current 199kW model (188kW for Australian models).
We can likely also expect the Haldex all-wheel-drive system to feature, along with six-speed manual and DSG automatic transmissions.
The new Golf R will benefit from the same weight-saving changes featured across the all-new Golf range, with at least 100kg expected to be cut, thanks to Volkswagen's new 'MQB' platform.
