Another day, another report on Volkswagen's all-new Golf R, due for a pre-Geneva unveiling in the coming days.

While the new GTI hot hatch is expected to deliver around 162kW, talk in recent months suggests the new R will surge through the 200kW barrier with a circa-215kW output, and 380Nm of torque.

A new report with Britain's Autocar this week adds credence to the whispers, claiming specific figures of 286bhp (213kW) and 280lb-ft (379Nm) of torque.

That power is expected to come from an uprated version of the 2.0 litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine driving the new GTI.

Volkswagen's lighter new fifth-generation Haldex all-wheel-drive system should also feature, with a pair of electronic differentials, all promising faster power transfer.

The new engine will also likely be mated to six-speed manual and seven-speed DSG transmissions, and a 0-100km/h time of around 5.0 seconds is on the card.

The Autocar report adds that the new R will also come standard with a louder smile-cracking exhaust note than the previous model.

The new Golf R will benefit from the same weight-saving changes featured across the all-new Golf range, with at least 100kg expected to be cut, thanks to Volkswagen's new 'MQB' platform.

As for the regular 2013 Golf range, expect an Australian debut to occur in the second quarter of this year.
