2014 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF R

Volkswagen's new 2014 Golf R has surfaced online today, confirming speculation that the new hot hatch will again share its powerplant with Audi's S3 performer.

The images released today also offer the first official look at the hatch spied frequently in recent months, revealing the Golf R's unique front bumper design.

As with the outgoing Golf R, little else about this new model's styling has changed from the new GTI. There's the familiar gloss black grille and new wheel designs, while the rear end sees the exhaust tips returned to the corners.

But enough with style, what is the new Golf R packing under its blue skin? Volkswagen has confirmed a 2.0 litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine for the new model.

As it does in the Audi S3, the turbo engine produces 221kW and 380Nm of torque, although Australia's hotter climate means we'll see that power figure reduced to 206kW.

By comparison, the outgoing Golf R in Australia offers 188kW and 330Nm torque - so, while the de-tuning will sting fans, an increase to 206kW should please many. (And those willing to void warranties won't find it hard to extract more... - Ed.)

The power boost also brings a decent leap in performance, with the new model promising a 0-100km/h time of 5.3 seconds in manual form, and a sharp 4.9 seconds with the six-speed DSG auto.

That again compares favourably to the outgoing model, which lists 5.9 and 5.7 seconds respectively.

Helping the R get there - and through corners - is the latest Haldex all-wheel-drive system, with four Electronic Differential Locks (EDS) XDS+ electronic differentials at each axle.

And, like all of the new Golf 7 models, a lighter kerb weight than its predecessor. Fuel consumption is also improved, dropping to 6.9 l/100km with the DSG, compared to 8.7 in the current model.

Watch for the new Golf R to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show, with an Australian debut likely to occur early in 2014.
