The next generation of Volkswagen's Golf GTI hero car has been previewed at this week's Paris Motor Show with the unveiling of a so-called concept.

Officially a design study, the 2014 GTI Concept offers the first official look at the top-shelf model in the Golf range - until the new R shows up, that is.

Bringing the usual GTI enhancements, this 'concept' features a honeycomb mesh grille, traditional red garnish, darkened LED tail-lights, new bumpers and skirts, and big new five-spoke wheels.

The cabin gets the familiar tartan upholstery, along with an all-black layout and red contrast stitching. The steering wheel also gets a retro-inspired circular horn pad.

The all-important power figures have also been revealed today, with the new GTI - at least in concept form - offering two separate performance options.

In its standard trim, the GTI Concept is powered by a new 2.0 litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine producing 160kW and 350Nm of torque - up from 155kW and 300Nm in the current model.

Mated to a six-speed manual, Volkswagen promises a 0-100km/h time of 6.6 seconds and fuel consumption figures of 6.0 l/100km.
