2014 TOYOTA RAV4 AUSTRALIA

Toyota has added new features to its RAV4 range for Australia, less than a year on from the new model’s local launch.

Boosting safety and comfort levels, the updates also bring price increases between $200 to $1800. And for 2014, Toyota has removed four manual-transmission models, “reflecting customer demand”.

The technology update also marks a first for the brand’s local family, with the RAV4 Cruiser debuting Toyota’s Reverse Cross Traffic Alert.

Another first for the Australian Toyota range is Lane Departure Alert, also now standard with the Cruiser model.

Every RAV4 model is now also equipped with a reversing camera, thank to its addition to the entry GX models.

All 2014 models have a 6.1-inch full-colour touch display in the centre stack, operating the multimedia system.

Cruiser models pick up an 11-speaker JBL audio system with DAB+ digital radio, with other features including automatic high-beam and a ‘back guide’ display in the reversing camera view.

Up-spec models now wear 18-inch alloy wheels for 2014 with 235/55 rubber, replacing the 17-inch wheels and 225/65 tyres of the 2013 range.

Toyota Australia sales and marketing boss Tony Cramb said this week that the updates “more than account” for the 2014 line-up’s price bump.

"RAV4 was launched as recently as February and has been well received in Australia with sales this year reaching 15,595 - an increase of 21.2 per cent over the same period last year," he added.

"Toyota's commitment to safety and to our customers drove us to bring these latest features to the market now, rather than waiting for a more typical upgrade timing."

As before, engine options in the updated RAV4 range include two petrol four-cylinder mills, and a single turbodiesel option.

The petrol engines are familiar to the Toyota range, with the duo led by a 2.5 litre 132kW engine, followed by a smaller 2.0 litre 107kW mill.

The diesel option is a turbocharged common-rail 2.2 litre unit producing 110kW and 340Nm, the latter available between 2000rpm and 2800rpm.

Depending on specification, two-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations are available, along with six-speed manual and automatic transmissions.

AWD petrol models however can now be had in automatic form only, with the manual version of all three models removed for 2014.

Likewise, the manual version of the AWD diesel Cruiser model has been removed, although AWD diesel GX and GXL models still feature a manual as standard.
