Toyota has unveiled its all-new 2014 Kluger at the New York Auto Show this week, appearing here in its US-market 'Highlander' form.

The big SUV debuts with styling drawn from across the new Toyota range, but retains the large grille and slender headlight formula of the outgoing model.

There's also a distinctly American look to the new Kluger, its tall front-end design and trapezoidal grille design reminiscent of the US-market Tacoma.

The new model is also larger than its predecessor, measuring 69mm longer at 4850mm and 15mm wider. Wheelbase remains unchanged at 2790mm however, and height also remains 1730mm.

Toyota says the larger exterior dimensions have resulted in greater interior space, along with easier access to the third row. Cargo space behind the third-row seats is also improved, although numbers have not been released.

Visibility gets a boost thanks to a repositioned A-pillar design, while the size of the rear quarter glass has been increased to provide a wider view for driver and occupants.

As expected, the new Kluger will be offered in Australia with a 3.5 litre V6 petrol engine exclusively, mated to an electronically controlled six-speed automatic transmission.

Specific mechanical details have not been released, but expect the 3.5 engine to be Toyota's familiar 200kW unit.

Fuel consumption figures are also said to have been improved, although no exact numbers have been offered.

Towing capacity for the Highlander revealed in New York is listed at 2267kg. In its current form, the Australian Kluger lists a 2000kg rating.

US-market options will also include a smaller 2.7 litre petrol engine and a 3.5 litre petrol-electric hybrid, although neither is expected to come to Australia.

Depending on specification, front- and all-wheel-drive configurations will also be on offer in Australia.

Toyota's new Dynamic Torque All-Wheel-Drive will also feature, using sensors through the SUV's drivetrain to govern the transmission of torque to the rear wheels.

The carmaker says it has worked to enhance the Kluger's handling, with specially-tuned springs, shocks and power steering.

Australia

Built in the US state of Indiana, the new Kluger range will make its Australian debut in the first half of 2014.
