Toyota has handed down new details for its upcoming 11th-generation Corolla sedan, bound for an Australian launch early next year.

Revealed in June, the new sedan will join the Corolla hatch already available in Australia. And, while local specs are still to be confirmed, a number of key details for the European model have been revealed.

Depending on the market, the Corolla sedan will be offered with four petrol engines and one diesel, along with six-speed manual, six-speed auto, and CVT auto transmissions.

The entry petrol option is a 1.33 litre Dual VVT-i engine, offering 73kW and 128Nm of torque. Mated to a six-speed manual, the engine lists fuel consumption at 5.6 l/100km on the combined cycle.

There's also a more powerful 1.6 Dual VVT-i unit, producing 89kW and 154Nm from 5200rpm. With the six-speed manual, fuel use is listed at 6.6 l/100km, while the Multidrive S CVT auto cuts consumption to 6.3 l/100km.

Another 1.6 litre petrol engine will also be offered, in the form of the Dual VVT-i based Valvematic engine. The unit offers a marginal power boost to 97kW and 160Nm, with torque coming on sooner at 4400rpm. Available only with the CVT auto, fuel use drops to 6.0 l/100km.

Topping the petrol range is the familiar 1.8 litre Dual VVT-i unit, again available only with the CVT auto in the sedan. Power is rated at 103kW and 173Nm - the latter from 4000rpm - and fuel use is listed at 6.4 l/100km.

Representing the diesel side of the equation is a 1.4 D-4D turbodiesel, offering 66kW and 205Nm, with max torque available between 1800 and 2800rpm.

Transmission options for the diesel are a six-speed manual (fuel use: 3.8 l/100km) and a six-speed MultiMode auto with stop&start technology.

While Australian engine options are still to be confirmed, we can likely expect Toyota to stick with the 1.8 litre petrol engine as its powertrain of choice.

Three trim levels will be offered in Europe, including Live, Active and Lounge grades. Features will include Smart Entry & Start, dual-zone air conditioning, Toyota Touch 2 infotainment system and Simple Intelligent Park Assist (SIPA).

Toyota says the new sedan is more spacious than its predecessor, riding on a 2700mm wheelbase (100mm longer than the hatch).

Overall, the new sedan is 80mm longer than before, and boot space has grown to 452 litres - around 20 litres more than the new Kia Cerato sedan and Ford's Focus sedan.

The new Corolla Sedan is due to go on sale in Australia in the first half of 2014, with specific timing and specifications to be confirmed closer to the launch date.
